Everybody has violence and rage in them, it just takes a certain thing to bring it out. We are all capable of doing harm to another person if it is our life that is at stake. If there is a certain ritual like there is in 'The Lottery', then people just grow acustom to it. These are all ordinary people that are no different than any of us. There are some circumstances like if a man loves a woman with all of his heart an she cheats on him, that the man can just lose it and commit a murder. This is an ordinary man, but he is pushed to the edge and is out of his normal state of mind. People are capable of things they dont realize are bad at the time or even at all sometimes.
